The exquisite colours of enamelling have been the choice of kings for centuries. This book explains the rich traditions of the magnificent technique of champleve, which combines the skills of engraving and enamelling. Champleve is a technique of enamelling requiring the creation of a cell into which enamel is then applied. Celebrating fifty years of working as a master craftsman, Phil Barnes gives a unique insight into all aspects of the process. He explains the techniques of engraving in preparation for enamelling, and then looks at enamels and how to work with them to create a piece, through to the final polishing and finishing.

  • Brief background to the history of enamelling, the materials and the techniques used
  • Introduction to the workshop and tools for the engraver and the enameller
  • Instruction on transferring designs and making first cuts, recessing a cell and surface texturing for enamel
  • Techniques for working with enamels, including laying over shaped surfaces, grading colours and repairing
  • Advice on kilns and firing, polishing and finishing

" As a master of the art of engraving and enamelling, in his book Phil Barnes invites you to sit by his side at his bench in much the same way his Dad did for him. An experienced and skilled craftsmen and designer, Phil Barnes is also an excellent mentor, teaching the student to take responsibility for their learning by guiding and encouraging and occasionally gently chiding, rather than force feeding techniques and knowledge. He encourages us to consider and to use our senses, to listen, to watch and to feel. In the book Phil Barnes talks about the importance of maintaining and caring for the tools we use and how in doing so we improve the quality of our pieces and work more economically. He discusses the use of quills and how to trim and hone them to use for wet laying enamel. This is a key resource for all scholars of engraving and enamelling. The step- by-step photographs are extremely helpful in demonstrating the processes described, giving clarity to the instructions. The photographs of Phil Barnes' stunning work are inspirational. As such, it is also a book that would appeal to the art and design enthusiast and grace any coffee table. Through the Guild of Enamellers, I am fortunate to have been taught (the technique of plique-a-jour) by Phil Barnes. The wonderful thing about his book is that through his easy and direct writing style, I can hear Phil's voice, hear his teaching, his words of instruction, guidance, encouragement and above all, his sense of humour. It is as if Phil is here in my workshop right next to me. "
