Spitfire is the first of the new Sovereign Series books. These books deal exclusively with a single aircraft rather than the multi aircraft format of Legends Of The Air.

This 184 page A4 sized book features substantial colour including four dozen specially drawn colour sideviews of the multitude of Spitfire variants in different operational liveries.

The book is written as a chronological history of the aircraft, in diary form and traces its progress from conception to phasing out of service and covers all versions of the Spitfire and Seafire. Included in the chronological section of the book are numerous 'breakout boxes' highlighting various aspects of the aircraft, its operational history, personalities, industrial background, political influences and other points of interest. There is also a narrative introductory chapter tracing the Supermarine company's history and the background to the Spitfire programme plus coverage of foreign operators, marks and models, the Merlin and Griffon engines, specifications and performance data, production tables and squadrons using the type.
